Whether you're new to coaching or just want a few tips to run fun, engaging sessions for tamariki, this guide has everything you need to feel confident leading a team in Years 3–8.

1. Coaching Basics

  • Session Length: 45–60 minutes

  • Structure: Warm-up (10 mins) → Skills Drills (30 mins) → Game Play (15–20 mins)

  • Focus: Build confidence and teamwork, not perfection

  • Tip: Keep instructions short and visual

2. Skill Drills

Dribbling

  • Zig-Zag Cones (use both hands)

  • Red Light, Green Light

  • Dribble Relays

Passing

  • Chest passes with a partner

  • Moving passes (jog and pass)

  • Target practice (marked spots or hoops)

Shooting

  • Close-range form shooting

  • Lay-up lines (alternate sides)

  • Around the key (shoot from various spots)

Defense

  • Mirror drill (follow a partner)

  • 1v1 shadowing

  • Close-out with hands up

3. Game Sense Activities

  • 3v3 half-court games (more ball time)

  • Scrimmages with a focus on key rules

  • Team relay challenges

4. Coaching Tips

  • Encourage inclusion and pair players of mixed abilities

  • Use high-fives, team cheers, and positive reinforcement

  • Set clear, simple expectations (e.g. respect, try your best)

  • Use a "Player of the Day" reward to celebrate effort
